Celebrating Area Women: Marla Starr

Originally from Redfield, SD, Marla Starr, CFP®, ChFC®, has been helping people make financial decisions for 40 years.  She has been in the Huron community for 22 years and is a self-employed business owner-franchisee with Krause, Starr & Associates, a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc.  Her team practice has offices in Huron, Mitchell, Aberdeen and Sioux Falls.    Her office is located at 110 Third Str SW Suite #107, Huron, SD.

“I became passionate about helping people with investment and insurance decisions when I was in my 20’s.  I had gone through some challenges in my own life that made me search for more answers on how to obtain financial security.  As a young mother, I found myself picking up the pieces for myself and my two young children after experiencing a failed marriage and a business in rural South Dakota.  I was basically abandoned.  That would become my “deepest wound” and the “why” that I am so passionate about helping others with financial decision making and long range financial planning.”

Recently, Marla has launched another dream of becoming a certified life coach with her new business, Starr Life Coaching, LLC.  She is available for personal and business coaching and group coaching/classes.  Her favorite quote is by Dr Wayne Dyer, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”!   Per Marla, “it’s about clarity and then empowerment.  How do you find joy in all areas of your life when it seems like it is off track and you just can’t see the “next best step”?  So many people get stuck and remain in a state of fear, paralyzed to move forward.  Through the assistance of a life coach, it’s possible to find your course or your path and take action on your life goals, dreams, passions and purpose!”

In her spare time, she enjoys golfing, traveling, singing and spending time with family and friends.  Marla has three children and six grandchildren.

In the past, she has served on the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau board and is a Past President, as well as a Past President of the Huron Country Club Board.  Starr has served on the finance committee of First United Methodist Church-Huron and is a member of Kiwanis.  Marla has recently been nominated to serve on the United Way-Heartland Region board in Huron.
