March 2016

Last December I talked in my column about our most recent project, the acquisition of the property south of Coborns. In acquiring this property and working with the city with their parcels, we hope to now be able to further develop the area making it much more attractive to developers seeking sites for retail and service locations. As I said earlier we intend on installing new streets, and infrastructure that will ensure high visibility and easy access from all directions.

In addition to working on the property acquisition, we have also been quite busy working with several clients who have interest in facilities in the West Industrial Park and elsewhere in and around our community. Generally speaking, by this time of the year companies have completed their strategic planning, and are now beginning the process of investigating potential sites to consider for expansion. This year appears to be no different as we have hosted a number of companies or their representatives, and given their interest levels, Huron looks poised to potentially have another solid year of growth.

I would be remiss if I didn’t at least acknowledge the fact that the Crossroads Hotel and Huron Event Center is undergoing some significant changes. The City of Huron and the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau are working with the existing owners to ensure that these changes take effect as seamlessly as possible. Everyone is doing their very best to make sure that event goers will get a quality experience when attending functions at the Huron Event Center.

In addition, we are continuing to our efforts to provide additional workforce development opportunities. Later here in PrairieTracks, you can read the update by Brooke Sydow, our Workforce Development Coordinator. Her article will detail her latest efforts to help the community with our workforce initiatives through programs such as the Build Dakota Scholarship, the recent Health and Wellness Expo and her work on a new rental housing locator.

In closing, on behalf of the GHDC Staff and Board of Directors, I’m hopeful you all had a wonderful holiday season and I’m looking forward to seeing you all this spring!
